Uterine hyperplasia. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a hyperplastic endometrium (uterine lining). Hyperplasia is the enlargement of a tissue or organ caused by an increase in the number of its constituent cells. Areas showing this proliferation are blue here, and appear as clumps of larger cells on the normal red/brown uterine lining. Such growth is usually caused by an excess of ovarian hormones. The cells are not cancerous, but in some cases hyperplasia may be a precursor to the development of a uterine tumour. Magnification: x450 at 6x7cm size | |
