Ectopic pregnancy. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of chorionic villi in a fallopian tube during an ectopic pregnancy. This is in a 35 year old woman 40 days after conception. An ectopic pregnancy is one in which the embryo implants in a fallopian tube (oviduct) rather than in the uterus. Chorionic villi (club-like) normally form in the placenta during pregnancy to allow the foetus' blood to exchange nutrients, gases and waste with the mother's blood. Ectopic pregnancy is a life-threatening condition which requires the immediate surgical removal of the foetus. Magnification: x200 at 6x7cm size | |
