HPV cervical dysplasia. Light micrograph of a section through the human cervix showing dysplasia (abnormal cell development) due to human papilloma virus (HPV) infection. Changes in the appearance of the stratified squamous epithelium are shown. HPV has caused enlargement of the epithelial cell nuclei (round, purple) and large vacuoles (white) have developed around them. This process is known as koilocytosis. Such cell changes form part of the condition known as cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) and can progress to cervical cancer. Haematoxylin and eosin stained.
