Genital wart. Colposcopy of a genital wart in the human cervix. Genital warts are a result of human papilloma virus (HPV) infection. This wart is seen as a white, florid, papillary lesion around the mouth of the cervix. The white colour is caused by the excessive production of the protein keratin (known as dyskeratosis) by infected epithelial cells lining the cervical wall. HPV is implicated in the development of cervical cancer. It is thought that HPV infection alters the nuclei of epithelial cells which then have the potential to form tumours. Genital warts are either surgically removed or treated with drugs. However, they do have a tendency to recur | |
