Genital wart. Light micrograph of section through an inverted genital wart (condyloma) from the human endocervical canal, caused by human papilloma virus (HPV) infection. The wart resembles an invasive lesion and grows downwards into the walls of the cervix. Epithelial cells are displaying koliocytosis: the formation of large white haloes around each nucleus (visible at centre). HPV is implicated in the development of cervical cancer. HPV causes abnormalities in the nuclei of epithelial cells which can lead to cancerous cell growth. Papanicolaou stain. Magnification: x100 at 35mm size | |
