Genital wart. Light micrograph of section through a genital wart (condyloma) from the human cervical wall, caused by human papilloma virus (HPV) infe- ction. Several lesions caused by the infection are seen (at upper right, centre and centre left) with spikes formed at the surface of the wart (top right and top left). Many epithelial cells of the cervix are also displaying koliocytosis: the formation of large white haloes around each cell nucleus. HPV is implicated in the development of cervical cancer. HPV causes abnormalities in the nuclei of epithelial cells which can lead to cancerous cell growth. Papanicolaou stain. Magnification: x100 at 35mm size | |
