Genital wart. Light micrograph of a section through a genital wart (also known as condyloma acuminatum) caused by human papilloma virus (HPV) infection. Many cells, particularly at the periphery of the wart (lower left) are displaying koliocytosis: the formation of large white haloes around the each nucleus. Lesions are also seen (at far right & top left). HPV is implicated in the development of cervical cancer. The virus causes abnormalities in the nuclei of the epithelial cells lining the walls of the cervix. These abnormalities can lead to cancerous cell growth. Haematoxylin and Eosin stained cells.
