HPV cervical infection. Light micrograph of a section through the human cervix revealing epithelial cells infected with the human papilloma virus (HPV). HPV causes genital warts & is implicated in the development of cervical cancer. The top half of this tissue layer is displaying koliocytosis: formation of large haloes around the nuclei of individual cells. The lower half is displaying a reaction to the viral infection by losing its normal stratified appearance, although no abnormalities are seen in the nuclei in this region. This is an example of HPV infection with no apparent cancerous changes. Pap- anicolaou stain. Magnification: x200 at 35mm size | |
