| Mild cervical cancer. Light micrograph of a section through the human cervix showing the onset of cervical cancer (CIN-1) due to infection with the human papilloma virus (HPV). Viral infection has caused large vacuoles to develop (known as koilocytosis) around the nuclei of the surface epithelial cells (at upper right). The next layer of epithelial cells (running from top left corner to bottom right) are abnormally shaped with enlarged nuclei. The basal cells (bottom left corner) are also thickened and showing abnormal growth. Cervical cancer is the most common type of cancer affecting women. Haematoxylin and Eosin stained cells.
