Cervical examination. Colposcope image of a cervix (centre) stained with iodine to detect abnormal cells. There is a section of negative staining (black,centre),indicating possible dysplasia. The speculum (silver) is at the periphery,holding back the vaginal walls. Dysplasia occurs when cell division of the cervical stratified squamous epithelium is disrupted & there is abnormal cell growth. There are 3 stages of cervical dysplasia,ranging from mild (CIN 1) to moderate (CIN 2) to severe (CIN 3) with carcinoma. Treatment depends upon the severity of the disease,but may involve the removal of affected tissue by surgery | |
