Light micrograph showing invasive cancer of the cervix. This biopsy section shows a moderately- differentiated tumour: the term differentiation refers to the structural resemblance of the tumour cells to their original cell line,in this case the squamous cells of the cervix. Here,a severely abnormal (dysplastic) cervical epithelium appears towards the right (purple staining layers of cells). Groups of cancer cells appear to have penetrated the basement membrane of the epithelium (centre) and appear on the left of image. Penetration of the basement membrane is indicative of invasive cancer of the cervix | |
