MODEL RELEASED. Monitoring baby's brain. Measure- ment of a baby's brain activity using infrared (IR) light. This allows monitoring of the brain's development and brain damage; the baby's ability to distinguish between the appearance of its mother and abstract objects is being tested here. A measuring device strapped to the back of the baby's head emits IR which can penetrate tissue & bone, and detects any reflections. Active brain areas have a larger supply of blood; this affects the characteristics of the reflected IR. Computer analysis of the reflections shows where the activ- ity is centred. The device was developed at University College Hospital,London,Britain | |
