IVF embryo storage. Scientist storing embryos created by in vitro fertilisation (IVF) in a cryogenic (frozen) tank. The embryos were created by injecting human ova (eggs) with sperm to fertilise them. The resultant zygotes were grown in the lab until they reach an early stage of embryonic development. Some embryos are implanted in a patient's uterus, while others are frozen in case the first implantation is unsuccessful. Photographed at the Marques Institute,Barcelona,Spain. The Institute is the first in Europe to offer embryo adoption, where the embryos implanted into a woman's uterus are not biologically linked to her or her partner | |
