Dental implant. Light micrograph of a cross- section through a titanium metal dental implant (multicoloured) in a jawbone (brown & green). Implants are used to support false teeth (dental prostheses) where teeth have died and been removed. This is the implant's base,or post, which has been surgically embedded into a hole drilled in the jawbone. The outside of the post is "fluffed up" so that new bone will grow into the titanium to provide a strong base for the false tooth. An attachment will then be screwed onto this post. Finally the false tooth will be cemented onto this attachment. Interference contrast. Magnification: x15 at 5x7cm size | |
