Dental drill. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the tip of a dental drill with angular fragments of diamond on its surface. These bits of diamond are extremely hard and are used to cut away areas of dead and damaged tooth caused by tooth decay. The diamonds are embedded in a steel matrix. New drills are coated in a thin layer of gold to prevent their surface from being oxidised. Magnification: x20 at 6x7cm size | |
