Hindu cosmological myth, artwork. Ancient Hindu myths describe the Earth as being disc-shaped and supported on the backs of elephants and a giant turtle. Versions of the myth vary, with some having a single giant elephant or turtle, and others having four elephants, one at each corner of the world. Some have an endless sequence of turtles and/or elephants, giving rise to the expression 'It's turtles all the way down!'. This myth has been used to illustrate the philosophical problem of infinite regress, where the solution to one question gives rise to new questions.
