Toenail removal. Chiropodist's gloved hands using tweezers to remove a 57-year-old woman's involuted toenail. A tourniquet (green) is restricting the loss of blood through bleeding. The operation is carried out under a local anaesthetic. The toenail was growing abnormally and digging into the flesh of the toe (ingrowing). Excessive ingrowth had led to the involution of the nail, where the sides of the nail had curled in on themselves. The severity of the case required surgical removal (avulsion) of the nail. Toes with ingrowing nails can become infected and sore, making it painful to walk. The condition can be caused by unsuitable footwear or incorrect cutting of the nails | |
