Hepatitis A vaccination, being administered to a young child in Marneuli,Georgia. Hepatitis A is an infectious liver disease caused by the hepatovirus species hepatitis A virus (HAV). The disease is usually transmitted via contaminated food or drink. Hepatitis A symptoms are acute and can be fatal, having a mortality rate of around 2% in developed countries for those aged 50 and over. The vaccine contains an inactivated extract of HAV,which stimulates the immune system to produce antibodies without causing an infection. The vaccine is usually given to patients about to travel abroad to high-risk areas with poor sanitation, where the disease is more common | |
