Artificial urinary sphincter. Frontal X-ray of a 64-year-old man with an artificial urinary sphincter (AUS). A urinary sphincter is a muscle that acts as a valve and controls the amount of urine leaving the bladder. This patient has had a prostatectomy (prostate gland removal),which damaged the sphincter and caused severe incontinence. The round mass at upper centre is a pressure regulating balloon that enables the urine to flow at an even rate when the artificial valve (lower centre) is open,as seen here. For an image of the valve closed, see M600/396 | |
