Severe keloid scarring following cosmetic breast reduction surgery. Keloid (or cheloid) is a hard, prominent, irregular type of scar tissue which proliferates more than is required to heal a wound & which may contine to grow. It often forms where healing injuries, burns or surgical incisions are under tension. Some individuals are more prone to keloid scarring than others. It tends to occur in some families and is more common in black people. Keloid scarring is rare in infancy and old age,and tends to be less severe after the age of 30. In the early stages, keloids may respond to local steroids, compression or cryotherapy, but treat- ment is usually by re-excision & radiotherapy | |
