Bone implant research. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of growing human bone cells (osteoblasts) used in bone implant research. Such bone cultures are being used to develop liquid implants, which will form strong new tissue when injected into patients with complex fractures and those suffering from osteoporosis (brittle bones). The cells are cultured on a glass-foam,to which they adhere, grow and bind together, forming bone tissue. The cells seen here are producing extracellular matrix material (long strands),which binds them together. Photographed at the Imperial College Centre for Tissue Engineering,London,UK.
