Artificial skin. Light micrograph of a section through the first artificial skin to be virtually identical to natural skin. The skin's outer layer (epidermis) is covered with a layer of dead, hard cells (red). In the epidermis (purple) are keratinocyte cells (dark areas). These fill with hard keratin protein, flatten and die as they move towards the surface,so replenishing the top layer as it is worn away. Below the epidermis is the skin's middle layer, the dermis (pink). This skin was developed by the L'Oreal laboratory in Paris,France,in 1997. It is used in aging and cosmetics research | |
