First stage in the preparation of "artificial" skin. A scientist holds a petri dish containing strips of epidermis freshly separated from the dermis of a sample of skin obtained from a plastic surgeon. Subsequently, the keratinocytes (cells of the epidermis) are separated in a centrifuge and "sown" onto a small fragment of human dermis. After a number of days, the result is an enlarged section of reconstituted skin. Photographed in Prof. Jean Thivolet's laboratory at l'hopital Edouard Herriot in Lyons,France | |
