First stage in the preparation of "artificial" skin. A special tool (a "credo") is used to carefully separate the outer epidermis from the underlying dermis in a small piece of freshly- obtained human skin. Subsequently, the keratinocytes (cells of the epidermis) are separated in a centrifuge and "sown" onto a small fragment of human dermis. After a number of days, the result is an enlarged section of reconstituted skin. Photographed in Prof. Jean Thivolet's laboratory l'hopital Edouard Herriot in Lyons,France | |
