MODEL RELEASED. Kidney transplant. Image 1 of 8. Close-up of surgeons preparing a patient for a kidney transplant operation. They are removing the diseased kidney from the organ recipient. Kidneys are transplanted to replace a failing or failed kidney. In this case the patient has polycystic kidney disease, one of the most common causes of chronic kidney failure in adults. It is an inherited condition that may occur at any age. Kidney transplants have a high success rate, although recipients do need to take immunosuppressant drugs for the rest of their life to prevent rejection. The donor kidney may come from a living or recently deceased donor and can be kept viable outside of the body for several days.
