Cochlear implant surgery. Surgeon at a microscope with TV monitor inserts a cochlear implant (CI) into a deaf patient's ear. He is threading a wire with electrodes through the skull deep into the cochlear of the inner ear. The electrodes are attached to a receiver and enable sound impulses to reach the brain. After 4-6 weeks rehabilitation the patient is ready to wear externally a transmitter,microphone and a sound processor box which detect sounds. CI surgery is performed on profoundly deaf patients unable to be helped by conventional hearing aids.
