MODEL RELEASED. Cataract surgery. Surgeon prepares an elderly patient's eye for a cataract operation. The patient is lying unconscious on an operating table while the surgeon uses a metal retractor to keep the patient's eye open. A second surgeon is also seen by a table holding surgical implements. Cataract operations are performed to replace an opacified lens with an artificial lens. The damaged lens is removed either whole or by first breaking it up using ultrasound (known as phacoemulsification). A new lens is then surgically inserted to restore clear sight.
