Cataract extraction. Image 1 of 3. Eye of a patient in the first stages of a cataract extract- ion operation. The eye is held open by a metal retractor and drops have been applied to widen the pupil, thus exposing more of the lens. The damaged lens is about to be broken up & removed by the phacoemulsification probe seen at upper right. This probe uses ultrasound as minimally invasive method of surgery. A cataract is the loss of transparency in the lens of the eye. To restore normal vision, the defective is removed and replaced by a replacement lens which is surgically implanted. See images M570/082 & M570/083 for further stages of this operation | |
