Robotic brain surgery. Surgeon measures a feature on a Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) scan of the brain of a Parkinson's disease patient. The scan will be used by the NeuroMate robot surgeon to decide exactly where to place electrodes to treat the disease. Four electrodes will be implanted into the thalamus at the base of the brain through a hole in the skull. The hole will be drilled by a surgeon, but its position & the route taken to the thalamus is chosen by NeuroMate. The electrodes prevent the trembling caused by Parkinson's by electrically stimulating degenerated nerve cells. NeuroMate was developed by Alim-Louis Benabid at the Alain-Michallon Hospital in Grenoble,France | |
