Computer-aided brain surgery. Neurosurgeon uses a computer-assisted microscope to locate and operate by laser on a cerebral tumour in the brain of a patient. The site of surgery is also relayed onto a video screen (at top right). The powerful MKM stereotaxic microscope has been programmed with MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) scans through the patient's brain. The microscope plots the position of the tumour and maps it in 3-D virtual reality. The surgeon looks into the microscope and is guided by a cross of light on where to cut and how to avoid delicate brain tissue. When the tumour is reached it is destroyed by a laser integrated into the microscope and operated by a joystick | |
