MODEL RELEASED. Neurosurgeon. Seated at a high- powered microscope,a neurosurgeon operates on a patient's brain. He uses an ultrasonic aspirator in his left hand to remove tumour tissue. The patient is suffering from an astrocytoma cancerous tumour. In the background are MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) scans through the head of the patient, used to plan this surgery. This is an awake craniotomy, brain surgery conducted while the patient is brought to an awake state from a general anaesthetic. During surgery the patient's ability to speak and respond is assessed; brain damage from surgery is thus avoided. Photographed at the Atkinson Morley's Hospital,London | |
