MODEL RELEASED. Heart valve surgery. Heart-lung machine being used to oxygenate and pump blood round a patient during heart valve surgery. The surgeons are standing at the patient's groin, one of the areas from which the blood is removed and returned by the machine. These machines include pumps (lower right),the regulator (lower centre),and part of the oxygenating mechanism (centre). The patient's chest is at centre left. The small hole in the chest, and the internal display on the monitor, show that this is keyhole heart surgery. The defective heart valve will be replaced through the hole in the chest. This is less traumatic than opening up the rib cage. Photographed in the UK | |
