Heart surgery. Blood-filled tubes linking a woman's heart to a heart-lung machine during coronary artery bypass surgery. Her chest is being held open by a metal retractor. The heart-lung machine takes over the function of the heart and lungs, allowing the heart to be operated on. Lengths of vein will be taken from her legs and attached to her heart to bypass narrowed or blocked coronary arteries. The coronary arteries supply the heart muscle with oxygen and nutrients.
