Hip replacement surgery. Image 4 of 30. Incision in a patient's hip showing the femur (upper leg bone) after being dislocated from the pelvis. The head of the femur (white, round, centre right) will be removed and replaced with an implant as part of a new hip joint. The closing stages of the operation will see the new joint joined together, reversing this joint dislocation. This surgery is usually performed in response to arthritis, the degeneration of the joints, and restores mobility to people who would otherwise be incapacitated by pain and unable to move freely.
