Aorta surgery. Open chest cavity during surgery to repair an aneurysm (swelling) of the aortic arch. The swollen tube (lower centre) is an artificial blood vessel that has been implanted to replace the defective aortic arch. It is attached to the heart (upper centre),and connects at its other end (not seen) to the rest of the aorta (the main body artery). One of the heart's coronary arteries is seen attached to the new aorta. Blood was rerouted from this area to allow the surgery to take place, but the blood flow has now been restored. Surgical instruments include the metal chest retractors and handheld stitching tools. For images of the surgery, see M551/331-336 | |
