Bone lengthening surgery. Image 3 of 5. Surgeon selecting a drill bit during distraction osteogenesis surgery,a procedure that enables progressive bone lengthening. This involves cutting the femur (thigh bone) and inserting a telescopic nail into the shaft. The nail is then extended by about 1 millimetre a day over several months, which induces new bone growth in the resulting space between the cut ends of the bone. This is often performed on individuals with bone deformities or shorter bones than normal. Photographed at Montmartre Surgery Centre,Paris,France.
