AIDS research. Masked technician pipettes infected SIV (Simian Immunodeficiency Virus) blood from a chimpanzee,in a study on AIDS. She works at a laminar flow cabinet for protection. On the TV monitor (upper left) are blood cells: T-lymphocyte white blood cells are attacked by the AIDS virus. Research on the animal virus SIV,similar to HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) is being conducted to understand the syndrome of AIDS. Chimpanzees develop AIDS much like humans. This study may help to reveal how the AIDS virus infects human cells, and may help the development of an AIDS vaccine. Photographed at the Pasteur Institute in Paris | |
