Small intestine. Capsule endoscope view of a heal- thy small intestine. The camera-containing capsule was swallowed in order to detect disorders such as ulcers in the digestive tract. An endoscope is a device for viewing the inside of the body. The capsule, measuring just 11 by 30 millimetres, has a light source and a radio transmitter. Once swallowed,it causes no sensation, and the patient can carry on life as normal. Over 24 hours, the pill moves through the digestive system, sending images to a receiver carried by the patient. The images are then downloaded for analysis. The pill was developed by Professor Paul Swain and his colleagues at the Royal London Hospital,England | |
