Brain mapping machine. This is a transcranial magnetic stimulator (TMS),which is used to map brain function. It consists of a magnetic stimulator (box) and a figure-of-8 coil (upper centre). The coil is placed over a subject's skull and an electric current is passed through it,producing a magnetic field that induces an electric current within a discrete area of the brain. The subject experiences different physiological reactions depending upon where the electrical current is aimed. For example, when placed over areas of the primary motor cortex it elicits movements in specific parts of the body. This information is used to map functions to areas of the brain | |
