MODEL RELEASED. Doppler ultrasound scan of neck. Woman patient has the carotid artery in her neck scanned by ultrasound to check for atherosclero- sis. The operator holds a small transducer on the patient's neck while examining blood flow (red) coloured on the screen. Doppler ultrasound scanning is used to examine blood flow in parts of the body. Turbulence in the flow of blood can be detected, which might reveal narrowing of blood vessels (atherosclerosis),clots or aneurysms (blood vessel swellings). Here the patient was normal. The transducer emits high-frequency sound waves which reflect off moving blood. The technique is harmless and causes no pain | |
