Robot-aided surgery. Intelligent robot (upper frame) carrying out simulated brain surgery on a model head. This minimally invasive surgery (MIS) system enables delicate neurosurgery to be carried out with a precision of a thousandth of a millimetre. The robot's movements are controlled by a surgeon using a joystick while viewing the operation site on an enlarged screen. The robot can manipulate various instruments inserted into a small incision in the head. MIS is safer than conventional surgery,in addition to reducing patient pain and recovery times. The robot was developed by a team from the Fraunhofer Institute,Germany, headed by Angela Hiller | |
