Robot-aided surgery. Technician carrying out simulated robot-aided brain surgery. This minimally invasive surgery (MIS) system enables delicate neurosurgery to be carried out with a precision of a thousandth of a millimetre. The seated surgeon controls the robot using a joystick while viewing the operation site on the enlarged screen. The intelligent robot (upper left) can manipulate various instruments through a small incision in the head. MIS is safer than conventional surgery,in addition to reducing patient pain and recovery times. The robot was developed by a team from the Fraunhofer Institute in Germany headed by Angela Hiller | |
