Snuff taking. Historical artwork of a well-dressed man offering his companion some snuff. Snuff is,strictly speaking, any drug prepared as a fine powder and administered by sniffing. The drug is thus absorbed by the nasal mucous membranes. In more common terminology, snuff refers to finely powdered tobacco. Tobacco snuff was used by native Americans, and was imported into Europe during the 17th century. Snuff taking reached the height of its popularity in the French court in the late 18th century. The search for ever more 'savage' blends led to the addition of powdered pepper in later years. This illustration is from the 19th century | |
