Hare lip. Close-up of the healing scar left by the surgical closing of a hare lip in a 7 month old baby boy. A hare or cleft lip is a birth defect in which there is a split (cleft) in the upper lip. This is due to the two sides of the upper lip failing to fuse during foetal development. The condition may be associated with a cleft palate. Treatment is by surgery early in infancy, which in this case has left a scar running vertically from the upper lip to the nose. Modern cosmetic surgery techniques can now minimise the amount of scarring which occurs | |
