Tongue-tie. View of tongue-tie in a 1 month old baby. This is a congenital deformity also called ankyloglossia. It occurs when the frenulum (band of tissue connecting the underside of the tongue to the floor of the mouth) is too short & extends forwards to the tip of the tongue. There are usually no symptoms apart from limited movement of the tongue. Despite Old Wives tales to the contrary, this condition does not often cause a speech impediment. Treatment includes a minor operation to divide the frenulum | |
