False-colour three-dimensional computed tomography (CT) scan of the skeleton of an anencephalic foetus. Much of the limb data are excluded from this CT scan image. The skeletal development of this foetus is well-advanced,except for skull regions, particularly the cranium. Anencephaly is the condition of foetal development in which there is partial or complete absence of bones of the rear of the skull. It is often associated with other nervous system defects, such as spina bifida (exposed spinal cord). Anencephaly also results in incomplete development of the cerebral hemispheres of the brain, with fatal consequence | |
