Burn. Close-up of a man's leg showing extensive second degree burns. The burn has caused a large blister (centre right). Burns such as these may cause shock, which carries a risk of death from low blood pressure. Second degree burns affect only the top two layers of the skin, the epidermis and the dermis. There is no underlying tissue damage, although extensive second degree burns may still cause scarring. Burns reduce the skin's defence against airborne bacteria, and infections on burn sites are a major concern. Burns are generally dressed with an antibacterial dressing,or left exposed to heal naturally with the patient in a sterile environment | |
