MODEL RELEASED. Bilateral inguinal hernia. Front view of a huge hernia in the inguinal (groin) region of a 72 year old man. A hernia is the protrusion of an organ or tissue through a rupture in the wall of a body cavity. An inguinal hernia occurs when a sac of peritoneum (membrane surrounding the abdominal organs) containing a loop of the intestines bulges through the abdominal wall into the inguinal area. This hernia is most common in men and may result from physical straining or even coughing. Large hernias are corrected surgically. The protruding intestine is replaced in the abdomen and the abdominal wall is strengthened with reinforcing stitches or mesh. Inguinal hernias commonly recur | |
