Partially ruptured achilles tendon. Swelling above the heel in a 47-year-old man with a partially ruptured achilles tendon. The achilles tendon connects calf muscles to the heel bone,and is used to pull up the heel. Here,the red swelling above the heel (at centre) indicates injury to the achilles. The patient was still capable of some movement in the heel so a diagnosis of partial rupture (breaking apart) of the tendon was made. A complete rupture of the achilles would have resulted in the calf muscle clenching with no resulting heel movement. Surgical repair of the tendon is often necessary
