Dislocated kneecap. Front view of a dislocated kneecap (patella) in the leg of an elderly patient. The position of the patella after dislocation has been circled in black. The patella is the triangular bone at the front of the knee. Dislocation is the complete displacement of bones at a joint from their normal position. In this elderly patient this occurred as a result of a fall. Dislocated bones are usually restored to their normal position by manipulation by medical staff. If this is not possible an operation may be needed to reset them. The joint will be immobilised afterwards to enable it to heal | |
